Not every motorcycle seems destined to become a Cafe Racer. Some roll into the workshop with classic lines and obvious potential, while others require builders to look beyond what is immediately visible. That was exactly the case with this Honda CX 650, a project that proves that with vision, creativity, and countless hours of work, even a Custom model can be transformed into a truly remarkable Cafe Racer.
At first glance, the Honda CX 650 isn't the most obvious choice for this type of build. Many enthusiasts tend to favour models such as the Ducati Monster or Moto Guzzi Nevada, mainly because of the character of their V-twin engines. However, the CX 650 proved to be an outstanding alternative, offering a more spirited engine than the well-known CX 500, stronger acceleration, and an unmistakable exhaust note that quickly becomes addictive.

Finding a good donor bike was no easy task. The chosen motorcycle was a Custom version that many believed had a frame unsuitable for a Cafe Racer conversion. What initially appeared to be the project's biggest obstacle ultimately became a relatively simple technical modification, with a few changes to the rear section of the frame creating a much cleaner and sportier silhouette.
As with many custom builds, the project involved far more than cutting, welding, and assembling parts. Much of the work happened long before the bike entered the workshop. Hours were spent researching components, creating digital designs, refining proportions, and sourcing parts. Every detail was carefully considered to ensure that each component worked together both mechanically and visually.
The result is a motorcycle that fully deserves its nickname, "Frankenstein." Not because it looks pieced together, but because it combines components from different motorcycles, restored second-hand parts, custom-made pieces, and brand-new components into one incredibly cohesive machine. The fuel tank, rear cowl, lighting, exhaust system, and countless smaller details were all carefully selected to create a distinctive identity.
Interestingly, some of the biggest challenges turned out not to be the ones that seemed most difficult at the beginning. Modifying the frame proved relatively straightforward, while achieving the perfect relationship between the fuel tank, tail section, and seat required countless hours of refinement. Small adjustments to the seat height or foam profile dramatically changed the bike's proportions. Only after several revisions was the clean, flowing line that defines a well-built Cafe Racer finally achieved.

Mechanically, the Honda CX 650 continues to stand out thanks to its reliable V-twin engine, well known for its strong power delivery and distinctive character. In this build, those qualities are complemented by a more aggressive riding position, a lighter visual appearance, and a minimalist design that highlights the motorcycle's unique personality.

The finished motorcycle proves that a successful custom build is not simply about choosing the right donor bike, but about having the vision to see what it can become. The Honda CX 650 "Frankenstein" is a perfect example of how an often-overlooked model can be transformed into a unique, well-balanced Cafe Racer with enough character to stand out both at shows and on the open road.
